Hey all, I’m coffeentacos, pronouns are he/him. I’m a library technician in my late 30s who has a lot of interests and hobbies, which makes it hard to give them all the time I’d like to (which definitely includes VNs). I’m here thanks to seeing a repost of pixel’s post about this on mastodon (mine is here).
I think the first VN I encountered was maybe Ever17 back in the early 00s via fan translation. First I read was Planetarian, then 999 and the silly Disgaea VN on PSP, though I didn’t get that you were meant to go through multiple routes in those until much later. One of my faves may very well still be 428: Shibuya Scramble. Adore the way it unfolds and has you piece things together. Honestly I’ve got more I want to read than what I’ve read, so hoping this helps achieve that!
As for genres, so long as it’s doing something interesting, I can enjoy it. High on my list of things I want to play are Aokana, Higurashi, Sea Bed, and Utawarerumono. (maybe I’ll suggest some of these 
)
